Book excerpt from Trial Run, by Ella Medler (romance)

Trial Run, available soon.

The sky was beginning to darken, taking on a purple hue topped with an orange layer of whipped clouds, when a sharp trill came from the house.
“Phone,” Jason said and hauled himself out of the pool. “Bit early for Amelie,” he said as he sprinted to the house.
The conversation can’t have lasted more than seconds. In a flash, Jason ran back out and waved his car keys at Rob.
“You wanna come along?”
“Sure.”
“I won’t lie,” Jason said as he unlocked a shiny new SUV parked by the roadside, just outside the green arch formed by the aging banyan trees. “I might need you for the muscle.”
“You’re taking me to a brawl?” Rob chuckled. “Feels like yesterday...”
Jason laughed as he peeled out and drove faster than the legal speed limit toward Boca Raton. “Only that fight had nothing to do with Amelie.”
“I couldn’t close my right fist for two days,” Rob said, flexing his fingers now, as he remembered their last fight together when, aged just eighteen, they’d walked away relatively unscathed from an encounter with the Ramos brothers. Well, apart from the deep gash in Jason’s thigh and Rob’s split eyebrow and grazed knuckles. They were lucky the patrol car arrived when it did, and the fact that there was a warrant already out for the brothers’ arrest didn’t hurt either.
Rob squinted as Jason turned down a less well-cared-for street. Most houses displayed signs of neglect here, and not all street lights functioned. Jason stopped the car in front of a property set back from the road, bordered by tall hedges and with a blinking neon sign over the double door.
Black Tulip Tattoo and Piercings, it read, and there were two black stylized tulips painted straight onto the white wall by the door. An offending odour permeated the space surrounding the house, and Rob sniffed twice, trying to place its origin. Chemical... antiseptic with a slight charring whiff, maybe.
“Watch my back,” Jason ordered and burst through the front door.
The small reception desk hid a girl who couldn’t have been more than fifteen. She took one look at Jason and shrunk back into her chair.
Rob gestured to her to get out, and she didn’t have to be told twice. The door swung shut behind her at the same time as Jason’s shout came from the room at the back. Rob sprinted over and caught the fist that had missed Jason’s face by a hair’s breadth. A quick twist and shove, and the pierced skinhead who’d launched it crumpled to the floor. Rob’s heel to the gut made sure he’d stay there for a while.
To his right, Jason was sinking his fist into the tattooist’s stomach, but that didn’t hold Rob’s attention for long. Because on the cot in the middle of the room the most perfectly shaped woman lay naked on her front, her peachy and flawlessly tanned ass cheeks glowing in the light of the overhead projector.  Two parallel stripes of white powder marred the round contour of her right ass cheek. The projector’s light outlined the word SLUT on her upper back. Only the S and part of the L had been inked, Rob realized with relief.
Relief was not the expression she wore when she turned her head around to see what the commotion was about. The scowl on her face deepened when she saw Jason bent over the tattooist, and then she sat up, scattering the coke, and turned to the door. Her ice blue eyes locked on Rob.

“Amelie?” he whispered, his heart skipping a beat.

Book Review By guest blogger Michael Phoenix: Martin Little, Resurrected - Ella Medler

Ok, this one is kind of difficult for me. Not because it is beyond my skills of reading / reviewing, but there is not one thing I don't like about it. Martin Little completely caught me off guard. I did not want to stop until the end.

From the beginning:
The cover is, somewhat, deceptive. I originally thought the genre would be for children or teens. First thing I was wrong about. It is geared towards teens and adults. The navigation is well planned and formatted. I have an epub version using Adobe Reader.

Ebook setup and formatting:
The first few pages include Table of Contents with links to every section. Title page, Publisher Information, brief author bio and dedication round out this section. The only thing I wish was included: a link back to the Table Of Contents. Not a major point considering the side navigation bar. Overall, the setup and formatting is excellent.

Chapter 1 jumps right into the action and story. Starting with Martin drinking a cup of hot chocolate. You did hear me right. You start to get a decent feel for Martin and his character in this chapter. We are also introduced to the other, main characters along with a few hints about them. The story does start off innocently with Martin having a mundane life. After finishing chapter 1, I was completely absorbed and wanted more. Chapter 2 is where the fun begins.

I will not do a chapter by by chapter breakdown here. I don't want to spoil anything for you. I will not give about the ending except one: Several things in this book are misleading, but some are not. The story mimics life to a point.

The backstory of the main characters: Martin, Vee, Archie and Gary is revealed throughout the chapters. The relationships between them is also developed and revealed in the same way. If you think you can just scan or skip a chapter or two, don't.

Chapter titles are misleading and deceptive, at times. This is a major point when I read. It keeps the reader off guard and interested. Some examples: chapter 1 - The Horrifying price of chocolate, cubicle six and chow. Ella only titles and not chapter numbers. This could be a plus or minus, depending on your preference. Personally, I don't care either way.

The main characters were well developed throughout the story. The way Martin evolved and learned is very impressive. His self-discovery and progression were not predictable. The supporting characters are well written and developed, especially in the main scenes / settings. Character interaction is a good combination of unpredictability at times.

Ella creates a very interesting and unique concept of Heaven in this book. I love this part the most. The only thing I will reveal here: Combine various elements and you have a new creation. Seriously, even this element, almost everyone can relate to. Her concept of heaven is one main aspect that kept me reading and wanting more. I can not say enough about this aspect of the story and scenes.

Overall:
this is one of the best books I have ever read. Martin Little, Resurrected is beyond anything I expected. I did not want to stop reading. The characters are believable. The plot has a lot of, unexpected turns. Scenes and visualization is well written and for the mind to see. Character interaction / conflict / development: very easy to believe; especially in the situations they are placed in. The end is unexpected on a high note. If I could give this book higher than 5, I would. Great Job, Ella Medler! Much success with this one.

This is the first book I have reviewed by this author. It will not be the last.

Book Review By guest Blogger Ella Medler - Paradox - Progeny Of Innocence.

Book 1 in the Paradox Series free from all online stores. HERE

Ella's Book Review:

I do not remember when I have been more spellbound by a fantasy book before.

I thought ‘The Angels Are Here’ was good, but not quite fully cooked. With Progeny of Innocence Patti Roberts is just showing off.

This book delivers on so many levels.

There is so much emotion in this story, so many human traits – the good (love, friendship, bravery and boldness) and the shameful (lust, egotism, self-indulgence, viciousness) all thrown together. But you can never misinterpret the true colour of a person. That weaker characterisation I saw in Book 1 here and there has gone completely.

Patti Roberts has grown up. Her writing skills rival some of the very big names out there and I would be surprised if awareness of her talent doesn’t sky-rocket within a few short months.

‘The Angles Are Here’ was a sweet little introduction to a fantasy world that might or might not be real. With ‘Progeny Of Innocence’ we have no choice but to believe. It’s not a fantasy anymore, it is a certainty.

‘It is a shame,’ Patti says, ‘that real life events very rarely portray the grandiose victories personified in fiction’. Because we know, we feel that undercurrent to all of our lives. We’ve always suspected there is more to this inconsequential human existence and Patti Roberts makes it easy to imagine what this might be.

The WAFEs slowly awake and remember, and the guardians pull together. Sparks are flying and you find yourself gnawing on your nails with increased anxiety. The good and the evil dance around each other in ever-decreasing circles until you shiver with the imminence of the epic battle you can see will be unleashed in the very near future.

There is a YA tinge to most of the second half of the novel, but it is nicely done and the adult world weaves through it skilfully. There are stories within the story, and again they do not detract, but expertly add to the texture and depth of the main plot.

We see heavy symbolism and original threads too, and a little Shakespearean conflict between the two obvious enemies: Damon, in body, hangs out with the Grigorians but his heart and spirit have long belonged to Juliette.

I must make a special mention. Often debut authors are so eager to get on with their story that they don’t spend enough time getting to know their own world, and that shows. Sometimes, they are lucky enough to be able to develop it in an acceptable manner in a sequel, and sometimes it is just so seriously underdeveloped, it is jarring. This is not the case here. Patti Roberts is so comfortable with her creation that it leaves no questions unanswered. You can see the prisoners being dragged in, you can see the forest and its people, you can understand the relationships between the six ancient races and feel their resistance to Grigorian rule.

Paradox is not a story in a place – it is the legend of a whole world.

As far as I am concerned, I don’t know how Patti’s writing could be improved upon. I’m waiting for the third book in the series and will be counting the weeks to its release. And there is a very strong chance that I might be tempted to sneak back to the Paradox blog page to get my fix and check for news here http://theangelsarehere.wordpress.com/readers-questions-answered/
