Is Your Novel "Long Enough?" By guest Blogger Michael K. Rose. Does size really matter?

The Long and short of it - Does size really matter? Welcome to Guest Blogger and Author Michael K. Rose.

As you may know, I've recently released Sullivan's War: The Complete Adventure. It collects three novellas (called Sullivan's War: Books I, II and III) which were released individually but make up one story line. Those novellas, usually priced at $2.99 apiece, have been selling fairly well. But The Complete Adventure's sales have been fantastic, selling in twelve days nearly as many copies as Book I, even though Book I's price was reduced to 99 cents near the beginning of the month.

I had suspected that I would see an increase in sales once I released The Complete Adventure, and here's why: I'd read long ago that many readers prefer to read only novels. They do not particularly care for short stories, and novellas? What the hell is a novella? The unimpressive sales of my collection Short Stories seems to support this idea. Even though Short Stories has a good number of positive reviews and I promoted it as heavily (if not more heavily) than Sullivan's War: The Complete Adventure, I sold nearly 7 times as many copies of Sullivan's War as Short Stories during July. And remember, Sullivan's War: The Complete Adventure was only available for the last twelve days of the month.

Now, I'm one who has always been a champion for short stories. I write them, obviously, and I even wrote a blog post called "Why I Love Short Stories." Another post I wrote as a guest on ME Franco's blog is called "Short Fiction is Dead?" In it, I propose that the eBook revolution will see a reemergence of shorter fiction. One thought is that a short story or novella can be published without the concern of making sure a "book" is of a profitable length. Now that printing costs are not a factor, any length can be a profitable length, assuming the story is sufficiently attractive to readers. Well, the three Sullivan's War novellas have been profitable, as have a few of the short stories I released individually. But my experience these past two weeks with Sullivan's War: The Complete Adventure has convinced me that full-length novels are going to be even more profitable. And while profit should not be a writer's sole consideration, it is unavoidable if one wishes, as I do, to make a living at it.

So is your novel long enough? What is long enough? The dividing line between novels and novellas ranges from 40,000 words to 60,000 words or higher. Will readers be "unsatisfied" with a 40,000-word novel? Does the word novella scare some people away? And what can one reasonably charge for short stories, novellas, short novels, long novels? I've been publishing my fiction for less than a year, and I'm still trying to work all of this out. But the sales of Sullivan's War: The Complete Adventure have convinced me that, for now at least, I should probably not focus on writing short stories quite as much. Novels are what readers want, and I have about a dozen novels waiting to be written. I just hope I can make them long enough.

A Good Attitude

So that got me to thinking & writing this post......

At the beginning of each day, we have two choices.

And that is - to start the day with a good attitude or to start the day with a bad attitude?

When I was 25 years old I rolled a car. When I was laying in the hospital bed in traction they told me I would never walk again. They were right about that.

You have a lot of time to think when you are in a predicament like that I found.

I realised two very important things. You can never have enough good friends and the attitude you have towards life can make you or break you.

I suggest starting each day with a GREAT attitude - and then hope like Christ that the day ends the way it started!

Where do you call home? I consider 2 places home. Darwin In Australia, where I grew up. My heart will always think of Darwin as home. And Cairns Australia where I have now lived for 20 years.

Do you have plans for a new book? My next book which is part 2 in the Paradox Series – Progeny Of Innocence, will be finished for a November 2011 release as an ebook. I’m really excited about this 2nd book. It’s deep, dark and very evil.

What inspired you to write your first book? A broken heart. I really wanted to pick myself up and do something positive for me – writing was my own personal therapy for the last 2 years. Heart all fixed now!

How did you come up with the title and cover design? I like the word Paradox and the meaning. It makes you think, see things from other perspectives. And the cover I ended up using for book 1 is kind of dark and mystic, gothic I thought. I liked it, it suited the story. It is by the talented artist Hazel Brown from Overland Park, United States.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life? Yes… And there are lots of bits of trivia throughout the book that mostly only I know about. Like the little friend of Grace’s Patrick Wheat, that dies in the book. I used the name Patrick to honour the life & death of Patrick Swayze. And the boys surname “Wheat” was the surname of the character the Patrick Swayze plays in the movie “Ghost”. That is just one example.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why? You know I would have to say, and don’t shoot me, that movies have influenced me more. I see a great movie and it makes me want to read the book. Know more about the story and characters as only a book can do.

What book are you reading now? Lots, but just recently I read 19 minutes my Jodi Picoult and really enjoyed it. I am presently halfway through The Passage by Justin Cronin. It is a long…dark story with lots of characters so you feel like you are reading lots on books in one which I am quite enjoy. And A Job From Hell by Indi Author Jayde Scott. A YA fantasy about a young woman that has been swept up into the magical world of vampires, angels and more.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest and why? I would have to Say Amanda Hocking – WOW, how inspirational has that girls success story been!

Is there anything you would change in your last book and why? From some of my readers/reviewers’ comments I would have to say that “Abaddon” – you will understand when you read it – should have played a bigger part in the story. People LOVE HIM. But readers will have to wait until book 2 because book 2 (The Progeny Of Innocence) is where Abaddon is at his most evil best.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to your writing? Time! Bears would have made great writers when they hibernate during the winter months. What with nothing else that is required of their attention…

Book Review - The Sunwright Chronicles: Empire at War By Kevin M. Villegas

Just had to share the latest review for my novel!

It is by Giovanni Gelati

Now if you go through my booklists on Goodreads or check out my archives on Gelati's Scoop you will find that I don't groove on this genre too much. I tried this novel to see if I could enjoy the genre and the author intrigued me.

Was I let down? No way, I was pleasantly surprised. The author, Kevin M. Villegas created a very nice universe here. He painted it with very nice strokes, creating images that took me away to a time far in the past during which I found being a resident for a short time, enjoyable. His ability to describe the action scenes and landscape gave me the feeling of walking through the woods with his characters and smelling the rotting leaves and horse hockey. I give this novel a big yes; don't pass this up whether you enjoy this genre or not. At bare minimum, put it in your Goodreads -to read- list.

The world of Angels in which Patti Roberts creates is one of greed, power, sex, control with a bit of conspiracy theory which lays the ground work for the war between good and evil.

But who is good and who is evil remains to be seen. Her world of Angels is multi-faceted and for a brief moment I was immersed into their world and presented with very complex and twisted characters and I found myself wanting more.

The author has truly created a villain worth reading, he is dark and so very bad that you can’t help but want to see more of his dammed soul. Read more…
