“Looks like you’ve got a new recruit, Kel.”
“Excellent. Who is it?” Kel couldn’t see beyond the door.

A brief pause, the hint of curly black hair and then Thalia stepped into the room. Her chin rose, imperious as a warrior queen.

“Like I said before, where do I sign up, Captain?”

Kel folded his arms across his chest, holding back laughter at the diminutive figure of Thalia Levonis in his fire station. Not only in his station, but demanding to join his crew. Certain she was playing him, he decided to play along. “Great. So you’re serious?”

“Of course I am.”

“In that case, Mandy, can you give Ms Levonis the hotline number and explain about the info pack and all that? Although maybe, since we’ve just returned from a call-out, we should show her what we do, starting with helping the crew clean off the appliance, which is what we call our fire truck.” He stripped off his sweaty T-shirt, balled it and tossed it through the doorway onto his desk before strolling to the door.

Thalia gasped and her gaze fixed on his bare chest.

Kel grinned. Two can play that game, Thali.

“Coming, Tha-li-a?” He stressed the third syllable of her name and stood in front of her, one hand on the door beside her head.

Pink raced up her cheeks and her eyes flickered up, down to his bare chest and back up so fast he couldn’t be certain. But he was almost sure he saw a flash of fire, a flicker of sensual awareness, and the promise of retribution in her eyes. Any one of those interested him. All three together? Intriguing.
