Up Close & Personal with Author – Kenneth Wayne. Two novels: Clip; and An American Branch

Where were you born Kenneth and where do you call home?
I was born in the United States, but I have lived in Japan since 1984.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?  My most recent book is Clip. Thirty words or less: Clip is about a man who spots himself in a sex video that has gone viral on the Internet and the effects this has on his life.
An American Branch was the rough draft of a novel that I wrote before Clip, but I spend the past several months rewriting it.  I released it at the end of last month.  It’s about how the consequences of our actions are usually different from what we anticipate because of our inability to perceive the ripple effects they have on our environment.

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say?
I guess you need to read the novels and find out what they say.  That’s what happens in my novels, I come up with an environment and the characters take over.

Do you have plans for a new book?  Yes, I do.   Is this book part of a series?  I guess all my books are a part of a series.  They synthesize the time in which they were written.  Simply, I started writing in the mid-1970s.  Apart from a few short stories, I started writing a slice-of-life novel that took place in an average town in the Pacific Northwest.  It centered on the lives of a dozen or more characters.  It was slightly patterned off of Anna Karenina in that it consists of short chapters, each one focusing on the life of one of the five or six main characters.  The next chapter would focus on another character and the novel would advance chronologically through the story by rotating through the cycle of characters.  It was written in third-person, omnipotent voice and in present tense so that it reads as if the events are currently unfolding.  As you can guess, the novel was massive, rambling and has yet to be edited or given much of an airing.  I think only two people besides me have ever read it.  Many writers, perhaps most, start with such a book as a way to find a voice.
For me, I found one character in that first book, an everyman of sorts, named Charles Journeyman.  He kind of became my Chichikov (the protagonist in Gogol’s Dead Souls), average in height, weight, looks, etc.  Since then every novel I have written has the protagonist named Charles Journeyman.  He is not always the same person; rather, my Journeymans probably live in parallel universes.
I found that using one character as the focus, it keeps my writing more manageable in both size and scope. In addition, I have settled into writing in first-person, past tense.  I have found that has made it easier for me to ensure that I can continue to write my novels, while also handling my life as a father and the primary bread winner for my family.
Overall, since my first novel, I wrote two novels and a travelogue in the 1980s, one in the 1990s, and Clip in the first decade of the current century; in addition to papers and books I wrote for my day job.

What or who inspired you to write?  And how long have you been writing?  I started writing around 17 or 18.  Reading the short story, “ABEL SÁNCHEZ: UNA HISTORIA DE PASIÓN”  by Miguel Unamuno made me realize the power in writing; how the writer was free to write what one found difficult to say in daily conversation.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life? About 2% of my writing is based on real events, I think.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why?   Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Vonnegut, Brautigan, Kafka, Bukowski, Camus, and numerous others like Kerouac.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?  Leo Tolstoy.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?  Ebooks since the quantity of books does not affect the weight.

Where do you prefer to buy your books?  Mostly Amazon and Smashwords.

Are you a self published (Indie) Author?  Yes.

Have you ever read a book more than once?   War and Peace, Slaughterhouse-Five, and Sombrero Fallout.

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?  "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?  1493 by Charles Mann in ebook format.

Are there any new Authors that have grasped your interest and why?  I don’t know what you mean as new.  I liked Jonathan Safran Foer’s first book back in 2002 as well as many other authors.  Indie authors I have enjoyed recently are Nick Wastnage, Poppet, Kristen Stone and Gerry McCullough (to name a few).  Check out the authors listed on www.etlc.info to find some great new writers.

Who designed the cover of your book?  Unfortunately, I did.

Do you have a book trailer? No, I don’t.  I would love to have some talented people make a couple for me.

What are your thoughts on book trailers?  With so many people being obsessed with video, I’m sure it’s a way to attract some readers to novels.

Do you have any advice for other writers?  Write what you want.  Don’t worry about genre so much.

Do you write under a pen name?  Yes, I do.

Do you ever write in your PJ’s?  I don’t have a pair.  I write in whatever I’m wearing at the moment.  I always wear cotton, so I write in cotton.

Cats or dogs?  Both.  White wine or red?  Both.  Coffee or tea?  Both.

Favorite food?  Indian or Japanese.

Vanilla or chocolate ice-cream?  I don’t eat ice cream anymore.

What do you normally eat for breakfast?  Granola with raw nuts and dried fruit.

What are 4 things you never leave home without?  Keys, Kindle, wallet, and MP3 player.

Laptop or desktop for writing?  Both.

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?  In my office at home.

If you were deserted on an island, who are 3 famous people you would want with you?  Winona Ryder and Norika Fujiwara.

One of your favorite quotes -  1% is not democracy 99% is.

List 3 of your all time favorite books?  My books and almost anything written by the authors I mentioned earlier.  Maybe, The Castle, Malone Dies, and Anna Karenina.

What is a movie or TV show that you watched recently and really enjoyed?  “Democracy Now!” with Amy Goodman

Author Interview with Park Cooper - Picaresque - Comedic Fantasy

Where were you born and where do you call home? Texas.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30

or less words, what would you say?
Picaresque. It's a comedic fantasy,
mostly about a court jester who loses his job and becomes an adventurer
instead.

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves,

what would they say?
Er, my main character narrates the novel, so I suppose
I did, and the novel is the result...

Do you have plans for a new book? Yes. Is this book part of a series? Not

yet, but I have many ideas for the sequel...

What or who inspired you to write? Good writers. And how long have you been

writing?
That's a long story. I suppose I've been seriously working on
writing fiction for a good 7 years now.

How did you come up with the title and cover design? The title just seemed

natural to me, because I'm an English professor. For the cover image we
turned to a local company, Mothership Arts.

What books have most influenced your writing most?
Pratchett, Douglas Adams,

Zelazny, for this book, I suppose. Oh, and Brust.

Are you a self published (Indie) Author? Yes.

Have you ever read a book more than once? Certainly!

What book are you currently reading and in what format

(ebook/paperback/hardcover)?
OUTCAST by Michele Paver, in paperback.

Coffee or tea? Tea.

Vanilla or chocolate icecream? Vanilla. I'm allergic to chocolate.

Patti gasps!

Laptop or desktop for writing? Desktop, preferably, but it doesn't matter

that much really.

What is a movie or TV show that you watched recently and really enjoyed? LET

THE RIGHT ONE IN. (The Swedish version, obviously.)

Is your book in Print, ebook or both?
eBook, currently.

“Picaresque” describes a humorous story concerning the on-the-road adventures of a clever rogue or rogues, often operating in a corrupt society; The Prisoner of Zenda, Tom Jones, and Candide are classic examples of this genre.

When court jester Reginald was in prison awaiting execution for telling a very ill-timed joke he made in front of the king, he made a couple of new friends: Hobart the magician and his patient, Sunny, an elf who has something very dangerous wrong with her mind.

On the run, they ally themselves with a few others who haven't yet found their place in the world:
--the world's greatest 8-year-old thief
--the world's only female knight
--the world's only talking dog

To all appearances, they've become just a group of traveling performers, but over time, they (and Hobart's mentor, who no longer has a body because he accidentally got trapped in a spell he cast to help him spy on the local ladies) become a crack team of spies for the desert City-State of Caravanserai.

Reginald's letters to his superior, Nina (thrust into an executive position after one of Reginald's early reports seemed to drive Reginald's previous superior insane) tell the tales of his and his group's efforts to outwit and otherwise foil hecklers, bandits, a troll with a fiendish plan for world conquest, the people's glorious revolution... and, when they accidentally stumble upon the source of all the monsters in the world, a very large dragon.

But more importantly, Picaresque tells the tale of Reginald's brave and often-apparently-hopeless quest to talk his employer, Nina, into going on a date with him.

Picaresque is a comedic fantasy novel from Wicker Man Studios, the creators of Half Dead, a vampire graphic novel published by Marvel Comics and Dabel Brothers Productions, and Gun Street Girl, a digital comic on the web at www.gun-street-girl.com. They have written multiple columns for review sites and other pop culture sites around the web (and still sometimes do).

Dr. Park Cooper teaches English at a college in Austin, Texas, and is the editor-in-chief of the indie comic book company Septagon Studios, as well as a free-lance editor for companies such as Del Rey’s manga division.

Barbara Lien-Cooper is a writer, editor, and adapter of novels, comics, and manga, including adapting manga for Tokyopop (including V. B. Rose) and Viz Media (Nora).

Image of Park Cooper
Dr. Park Cooper was born in Texas, where he currently resides, after a period of time living in Kent, Ohio, where he got his Ph.D. in literature. He writes with his wife Barbara Lien-Cooper at their creative studio Wicker Man Studios, and together they have written comic books and graphic novels, including HALF DEAD, a creator-owned vampire graphic novel that was published jointly by Marvel Comics and Dabel Brothers Productions. He also helped write one very short tale for his wife's digital comic, Gun Street Girl, drawn by Ryan Howe. While co-writing a manga project for Tokyopop shortly before that company's exit from the field, he and Barbara switched to also editing and adapting manga, such as V.B. Rose for Tokyopop, Nora for Viz Media, and many, many more. Most recently, Park and Barbara started writing prose novels, such as Picaresque, a comedic fantasy novel about a court jester… Read more

Up Close & Personal with Author - Joseph M. Rinaldo for A Spy At Home

Where were you born and where do you call home?
Born in Danville, Illinois, grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky, now
residing just outside of Nashville, Tennessee.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up

in 30 or less words, what would you say?
A Spy At Home. A thriller with a heart.

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for

themselves, what would they say?
“Buy the book!” Seriously, though, I think they’d say “Please don’t
judge me until you know the whole story.”

Do you have plans for a new book?

Yes, my new ebook, Hazardous Choices, will be released within the month.

Is this book part of a series?

No

What or who inspired you to write? I was reading Three Weeks with My

Brother by Nicholas Sparks. At the point where he told of getting a
one million dollar advance I knew I had to try this writing game.
That’s an excellent book, but I knew I could write that well.

Would you like to give away a copy of your book on this blog? Yes, I

would be happy to participate in a giveaway.

How did you come up with the title and cover design? When I write a

novel (I have eight more waiting in the wings to be released), I
usually just throw around a few titles I think are fitting, and my
wife comments on them. I usually reach a decision early in the process
of writing the book, if not before. I hired a website consultant to
create the cover design, and I think he did a wonderful job.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real

events in your own life? I am the proud father of an adult daughter
with Down syndrome; I based the character of Noah, the protagonist’s
son, on her.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why? I don’t

know that any books have really influenced my writing; my style and
tone are unique to me – however, I have been very impressed with some
books that I’ve read, and my desire is to be the best writer I can be.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet? Gillian Flynn,

who wrote Sharp Objects. That is a perfect book, and I enjoyed it
immensely.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover? I am the proud owner of

a Kindle, and I write books that will become ebooks, so of course I
have to say ebooks!

Where do you prefer to buy your books? Amazon; it’s so convenient to

buy and download that fast.

Are you a self-published (Indie) Author? I am. I self-published A Spy

At Home using Amazon’s KDP program, and one thing I have learned from
that experience is that a writer needs an objective editor to read his
book before it’s released.

Have you ever read a book more than once? Nope. Too many books, too little time.

What book are you currently reading and in what format

(ebook/paperback/hardcover)? I am currently reading Portrait of a
Monster, by Lisa Pulitzer and Cole Thompson. The book is about Joran
Van Der Sloot and the Natalee Holloway case. It’s a hardback book my
wife recommended to me. She is still “hooked” on physical books for
the most part.

What book do you know that you will never read? Gone With the Wind.

Saw the movie and was not impressed. If I’m going to invest that much
time in a book that long, I’d rather read one that has NOT yet been
made into a film.

Is there anything you would change in your last book and why? No. I

was pretty well satisfied with it.

Who designed the cover of your book? I hired a web consultant to

design it for me. I came up with one on my own, but it wasn’t anywhere
near as good as what he designed.

Do you have a book trailer? No

What are your thoughts on book trailers? Don’t know. Seems like a lot

of work for something you post on your web site or YouTube.

Do you have any advice for other writers? Yes; completely ignore the

advice of other writers. No, seriously, my only advice would be to
ignore “write what you know”. That puts limits on your creativity that
don’t need to be there.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to

writing? Get a professional editor to edit your manuscript. You can’t
rely on your own eyes, and a loved one or friend cannot be objective.

Do you write under a pen name? No

Do you ever write in your PJ’s? Geez, a little too personal, I think. 

What are your pet peeves? There are many; most recently, I had a

run-in with someone’s pit bull that they were letting run loose, so I
guess it would be careless dog owners.

Cats or dogs? Cats, definitely. We have two: a 20-pound tiger tabby,

and a 10-pound calico.

White wine or red? Neither. Don’t drink.

Coffee or tea? Sweet tea.

Favorite food? Chocolate

Vanilla or chocolate ice cream? See answer above

What do you normally eat for breakfast? Don’t eat breakfast.

What are 4 things you never leave home without? Cell phone,

sunglasses, something to read, and the love of my family!

Laptop or desktop for writing? Definitely laptop – way more comfortable

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing? Not by choice, but

because I work full-time, I mostly write at home in the evenings and
on weekends.

If you were deserted on an island, who are 3 famous people you would

want with you?
I don’t care, as long as one of them knows how to build a boat!

One of your favorite quotes – “All things in moderation.” This is my

favorite because most people don’t get that it’s a joke! It was said
by a Roman comedic playwright as a joke, and apparently no one but me
gets that.

List 3 of your all-time favorite books? Sharp Objects, The DaVinci

Code, The Count of Monte Cristo

List 3 of your all-time favorite movies? Star Wars (all of them), Pulp

Fiction, Shawshank Redemption

What is a movie or TV show that you watched recently and really

enjoyed? Documentary about PTSD in soldiers returning from Iraq and
Afghanistan

Pirate themes - Up Close & Personal with Author - Ben Galley - THE WRITTEN, Book 1 of the Emaneska Series

Where were you born and where do you call home? I was born in sunny Cambridge England, and now live in Guildford, near London

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say? My most recent book is entitled THE WRITTEN, Book 1 of the Emaneska Series. It's a brutal and thrilling adventure, cold, mysterious, full of dark places and dark people, Lord of the Rings meets Sin City.
Patti Says: oh i like dark!

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say? "Leave me alone"

Do you have plans for a new book?   Is this book part of a series? The sequel PALE KINGS is finished and in the editing stage. The Emaneska Series will likely span 4-5 books. Very exciting.

What or who inspired you to write?  And how long have you been writing? I've been writing ever since I could hold a pen, and originally it was the books of CS Lewis, Tolkien, and strangely enough the myths of Homer that inspired me. They will always remain my biggest inspiration!

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life? I think every character is a little slice of an author's mischievous mind. Mine I tried to keep as varied as possible, but occasionally a few of my own little idiosyncrasies managed to sneak out, especially into the witty retorts of Farden, the main character.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why? Recently I would have to say the inimitable Neil Gaiman and Ray Bradbury. They have an incredible way with flow and tempo that I have tried for years to copy, and they have a brilliant way of slipping a hint of insidious darkness underneath the lines of their stories, something that never fails to make the skin crawl.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet? JRR Tolkien, the legend that was.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover? Nothing beats the smell of a good old fashioned book.

Where do you prefer to buy your books? I like to support little bookshops, but in a pinch there's always Amazon.

Are you a self published (Indie) Author? I am indeed. Homemade through and through.

Have you ever read a book more than once? About 13 times. It was the Coral Island by RM Ballantyne.

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version? Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. The book was good but the film was even better.
Patti Says: Is that because you have a secret crush on Brad Pitt :)

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)? Ray Bradbury's Illustrated Man in Paperback. Great album art too

Is there anything you would change in your last book and why? There are a few bits I would like to change, mainly because of the new ideas I've had whilst writing the sequel (and planning the third) that I wish I could have hinted at in the first. But what's done is done! Maybe one day I'll do a re-release.

Who designed the cover of your book? Myself and my partner Claudia, who is a superb artist.

Do you have a book trailer? I do indeed! Find it on Youtube - www.youtube.com/bengalley

What are your thoughts on book trailers? They can be very hit and miss depending on the budget. Mine is very homemade so I tried to keep it as simple as possible. Even so I think they are largely untested waters!

Do you have any advice for other writers? Stick with it, whatever happens. Keep some inspiration nearby, don't force it, and edit. Again. And again. And again.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to writing? As a tiny little self-publishing blog once told me: "Self-published books have a reputation for being full of errors and spelling mistakes. The only way we self-published authors can disband this myth is by making sure our novels are as close to perfect as we can make them." I'm as guilty as the next and completely agree. Editing is key to making your book approachable and professional :)

Do you write under a pen name? No, and I don't think I ever would.

Do you ever write in your PJ’s? I've been known to write in nothing but a top hat...

Patti Says: do you have a pic to prove it?

What are your pet peeves? As far as writing is concerned, and once again I'm as guilty as the next, the wanton misuse of apostrophes makes me want to claw my eyes out!

Cats or dogs? Cats

White wine or red? Red

Coffee or tea? I'm British, Tea of course :)

Favorite food? Indian
Patti says: Definitely English!

Vanilla or chocolate icecream? Vanilla

What are 4 things you never leave home without? Wallet, phone, and keys, and clothes.

Laptop or desktop for writing? Laptop

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing? In the morning, surrounded by music

One of your favorite quotes - "I am constantly bereft of genius, but the voices in my head seem to have plenty to go around."

List 3 of your all time favorite books? Lord of The Rings, American Gods, and the Book Thief

List 3 of your all time favorite movies? Fight Club, American Beauty, The Green Mile

An actor you have a crush on - Scarlett Johansson, if you're reading this, call me back.

About this author

Ben Galley was born in sunny England in 1987. Since then, he has written
books, dreamt a great many dreams, and insistently become a nuisance. Those of you who frequent the sandy shores of the English isle might have seen the wanted posters. Fear not.

At 23, Ben is one of the youngest self-published authors in the UK, and has recently released his debut book, entitled The Written, the first in the eagerly awaited Emaneska Series. The sequel and second in the series, Pale Kings, is firmly in the editing stage, and is due for release in early 2012. You can find out all about Ben’s writing on the Books page of his website www.bengalley.com, along with a generous helping of his short stories, just for you.

Ben has been writing ever since he could hold a pencil and currently spends his time telling tall tales and daydreaming on park benches. He prides himself in being a downright nice chap, an upstanding English gentlemen, and an all-round closet hooligan. Worryingly for the rest of us, he still believes in dragons. He won’t tell you where they’re hiding, because that’s a secret, but he will tell you about them in great detail. Aside from writing, Ben dabbles in bass guitar, surfing, holds workshops and gives talks on self-publishing, and apparently owns an acre on the moon. Ben can be found being loquacious and witty on Twitter, or hiding in your garden shed.
