Up Close & Personal Interview with - Collette Scott. Author of - If We Dare to Dream

Interview with the lovely Collette Scott:  Where were you born and where do you call home?

I was born in a small town in Indiana, USA, grew up in Massachusetts, and now I currently live in the desert of Phoenix, Arizona.

Win a copy of this ebook on the Christmas Bloggerthon - HERE

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?

If We Dare to Dream is a story of betrayal, family, and the ability to forgive and love again. This story introduces the Evans’ family, cousins of Chuck Evans from Forever Sunshine.

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say?

Andrew has been dealt a serious blow. After serving his country in the military and returning home to be charged with a crime that he did not commit, he is scarred, bitter and wary. He doesn’t speak much but rather listens and watches others.

Jamie is a nurturer. She would run around and make sure everyone had what they needed before she would take her own seat. She would speak out clearly that people need to do the right thing at all times even if it’s an unpopular decision.

Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?

Yes, this book is one of three I’ve already completed, and I’ve just started the fourth. I plan to release them several months apart next year. Book two will come out Valentine’s Day, etc. The characters will tie into Forever Sunshine. In my newest book (book 4), we will see closure of Cher’s story, and she is making an appearance. YAY!

What or who inspired you to write? And how long have you been writing?

I have been writing since I was a child, and I completed my first book at the age of eight. As long as I can remember I have had voices in my head, telling me stories that I needed to write down. I believe I inherited the storytelling gene from my maternal grandfather. He was a poet.

Would you like to giveaway a copy of your book on this blog?

Absolutely!

How did you come up with the title and cover design?

I love photography and work very hard on my covers. If We Dare to Dream is a photo of both Superstition Mountain in Arizona, which plays a large role in the story, and a photo of ‘Jamie’ with Andrew’s horse. Jamie and Andrew grow closer through riding.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?

Normally I do not. I have a hard time integrating people I know because my characters speak to me directly. However, I have tried out a new thing for my new series, where I take aspects of people I know and turn them into supporting characters.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why?

I was a literature major in college, and I loved the classics. I find them so inspiring.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?

I can think of a few!

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?

I read primarily ebooks now, but I still prefer a good hardcover.

Where do you prefer to buy your books?

Amazon or Smashwords. I’ve found some great new authors on Smashwords.

Are you a self published (Indie) Author?

Absolutely! With all the changes in the publishing field and the unsteadiness of booksellers, I believe it’s the safest route to take nowadays.

Have you ever read a book more than once?

Again, absolutely! Lately I don’t have much time, but if a book truly moves me I will re-read it.

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?

No, not really. However, The Lord of the Rings trilogy was done brilliantly by Peter Jackson.

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?

I am re-reading and editing my newest so I can get advanced copies off to the bloggers. Once that is done, I plan to sit down and complete Niamh Clune’s Orange Petals in a Storm.

What book do you know that you will never read?

Nothing really comes to mind. I haven’t found a book yet that has been so offensive that I couldn’t read it. But then again, I don’t read every single genre either.

Are there any new Authors that have grasped your interest and why?

Oh, there are several, and I’ve mentioned quite a few on my blog. Some of them are taking part in this giveaway too.

Is there anything you would change in your last book and why?

Although Forever Sunshine was sad, the message of hope and healing made the tears well worth it. And, of course, I have written and plan to release four new books to give my readers some more information and extend Cher’s story. With that being said, I would have to say ‘no’. It ended as it needed to.

Who designed the cover of your book?

I’ve designed all of my covers. My second book in the series (due in February 2012) will be based on a painting done by a friend of mine if all works out well!

Do you have a book trailer?

Not yet! LOL

What are your thoughts on book trailers?

If people watch them, it’s a useful learning tool. The music, photos and words can portray a book’s tone effectively.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Write, edit and work very hard. It’s not easy to reach the masses. It takes long hours and hopefully a lucky break!

What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to writing?

Edit! Don’t be afraid to cut words. As painful as it may be, creating a tight story is the best option.

Do you write under a pen name?

I do, yes. It’s easier for me to keep my writing life and personal life separate.

Do you ever write in your PJ’s?

For sure! I am at my computer on average 14 hours a day, so oftentimes I am working away before I climb out of bed.

What are your pet peeves?

Wow, loaded question! My biggest pet peeve is when people take others for granted. A simple thank you speaks wonders.

Cats or dogs?

Both. I have both and am a total animal lover.

White wine or red?

Red

Coffee or tea?

I drink both, but I love a good cup of green tea.

Favorite food?

How about foods? I love Italian food and cannot live without chocolate. I’m a total addict and literally panic if I don’t have chocolate in my house. I require a daily fix.

Vanilla or chocolate ice cream?

After reading my previous answer, you should already know! Haha. Chocolate for sure.

What do you normally eat for breakfast?

If I remember to eat breakfast, it’s usually something light, like a piece of fruit.

What are 4 things you never leave home without?

My mobile phone, my purse, my shoes, and my kids… oh, wait, sometimes I’ve been busy and left them - no, really, I’m just kidding. If they read this, they’re going to yell at me.

Laptop or desktop for writing?

Laptop. The poor, trusty Toshiba has been through thick and thin with me.

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?

I’ll write anywhere I can as long as it’s quiet. With three kids, finding a quiet spot is sometimes challenging, and I’ve been tempted to hide in my closet at times.

If you were deserted on an island, who are 3 famous people you would want with you?

Aside from my kids? I guess I would probably prefer to be alone - serenity! But could I settle for a couple of deceased people? I guess if I had to choose it would be Mother Teresa, Thomas Jefferson, and Nelson Mandela. These amazing people stood up for what they believed in, and I am in awe of their inner strength.

One of your favorite quotes -

“Freedom!” from Braveheart. Every time I watch that movie I mimic Mel Gibson. My kids roll their eyes at me and call me a dork. I could list a few more, but I don’t want to take up too much space.

List 3 of your all time favorite books?

Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Return of the Native. Can you tell I love a good tear-jerker?

List 3 of your all time favorite movies?

Steel Magnolias, Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Glory. Once again, I go for the tear jerkers.

An actor you have a crush on -

I have a couple, starting with Clint Eastwood when I was young. I guess my biggest one right now would be Clive Owen. He’s pretty intense.

What is a movie or TV show that you watched recently and really enjoyed?

I rarely watch TV, but I do try to do a movie night here and there. We recently watched Despicable Me, and that was adorable. Transformers 3 just came out, and since my kids are on fall break my youngest has been replaying it over and over again.

The Queen's Envoy Extracts from the Oh So Secret Diaries of Lord David Prosser

The Queen's Envoy - Guest post - Review By Tima

The title really explains what this book is about. Lord David received his title when a relative passes away. He finds out that he also inherited his job. Lord David's life and job are described in this book in the form of journal entries.

The book was labeled as humor when sent to me and I have to admit I was a bit skeptical. Just because the author thinks something is funny, doesn't mean the rest of us will. But this book lives up to the title (of humorous) and goes beyond. I laughed all the way through this book. I enjoy British humor and that was part of it, but I think this author could tell about taking out the garbage and make us laugh.

This is Lord David's second book and I will certainly be purchasing the first one. This book is one of the books being given away on my blog. Make sure you enter to win. This book is certainly a keeper.

I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.

Patti says:  An enjoyable book - It's the "cat's whiskers" - and a ton of giggles!

Interview with Lord David Prosser. Author of The Queen's Envoy (The Barsetshire Diaries)

Enter the Christmas  Bloggerthon for an opportunity to win a copy of this ebook - HERE

A delightful read, October 4, 2011
By Patti Roberts (Cairns, Australia)
This review is from: The Queen's Envoy (The Barsetshire Diaries) (Kindle Edition)
Not a book that I would usually read - but I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The "Cats Whiskers" - Oscar's that is. British sense of humor through and through. Which is to be expected since it is Written by an English Gentleman and a Lord at that. I loved Lady J's straight forward attitude and Oscar's lofty Devil may care attitude. You know who runs this household! :)

Where were you born and where do you call home?
I was born on a British Forces base In Germany and my home is in Wales along with my heart and all the other bits and pieces of me.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?
More Barsetshire Diary is the latest. A look at the continuing life of a member of the British Gentry keeping a tenuous hold on reality while his cat rules his life first and wife second.  29 words...will that do?.

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say?
My lawyer will call your lawyer!

Do you have plans for a new book?   Is this book part of a series?
The new book will be part of the series The Barsetshire Diaries and is a sequel to the second book which introduces my occupation after receiving my Title. The second book is The Queen's Envoy, this one may be imagintively called More Queen's Envoy.

What or who inspired you to write?  And how long have you been writing?
I've been a great reader all my life and like most people have probably started a best seller that never got finished. I actually started writing about age 2 but my parents took the crayons away and moved me away from the wall. I only found them again this year ( aged 60)
and decided to give it another go.

Would you like to giveaway a copy of your book on this blog?
Explain the word 'Like'. Yes, I'll happily give one away (just so I can say I have a reader.)

How did you come up with the title and cover design?
The title for The Queen's Envoy was thunk out by me as it was the job the character in the book has (ME !!) The cover design may have been a mistake as it was mine when playing about with some clipart discs. The first cover was professionaly done and the third was done by a talented young illustrator Sara Japanwalla.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?
Both. But I'll deny it to the lawyers.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why?
Probably P.G.Wodehouse for the style of writing and because he was able to write without sex, violence and bad language. I wanted to make my book available for all age groups though there is innuendo sometimes.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?
I'm sorry never to have met Edith Pargetter whose Brother Cadfael books were good but whose books on the Brothers of Gwynedd were GREAT. From today I'd like to meet someone like Harlen Coben who's books I hate to miss, Terry Pratchett who's humour is fantastic or maybe Sue Grafton.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
paperbacks or hardcover for me as I like to have something in my hands when I read.

Where do you prefer to buy your books?
Anywhere I can find the ones I want from E.Bay to Superstores.

Are you a self published (Indie) Author?
Indie as I haven't enough time to wait for agents and publishers to make up their minds ( But don't let me stop you beating my door down guys, and that includes producers too)

Have you ever read a book more than once?
Yes, I regularly reread favourites.

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?
The LOTR films brought the books to life better than I could have imagined.

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?
Empire of Silver by Conn Iggulden in paperback.

What book do you know that you will never read?
The Silmarillion. I just couldn't get my head round it.

Is there anything you would change in your last book and why?
I should have brought the story of Dreaded Edna's attempt to become a Councillor to an end in case I don't go for a sequel to it.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
If you honestly think you have a story in you, write it. Then lat someone read it like an editor who can tell you whether it's worth tidying up  and pursuing.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to writing?
Write some more! Only because it's proved to be great therapy and cheaper than a therapist.

Do you write under a pen name?
Not so far but who knows what the future holds if I decide to try a different genre.

Do you ever write in your PJ’s?
Yes but it's a begger trying to get the ink out.

What are your pet peeves?
People who rely on bad language to sensationalise a book. People with no manners and the latest craze of wearing jeans so low that I can view the bum crack.....not a pretty sight.

Cats or dogs?
Like dogs but a cat has me.

White wine or red?
Sorry, don't drink these days.

Coffee or tea?
Prefer tea but too lazy to make a pot for one so drink coffee instead mostly.

Favorite food?
Titterton's Pork Pies !! No sponsorship honestly. I like plain homecooked meals like bangers and mash.

Vanilla or chocolate icecream?
An orange juice lolly.

What do you normally eat for breakfast?
I have cereal when I'm watched but crumpets with jam if I'm not. ( Diabetic).

What are 4 things you never leave home without?
Keys, cash, glasses and crutches ( without which I'd fall over).

Laptop or desktop for writing?
Paper first then onto desktop.

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
In a morning when there are no distractions or in bed at night for the same reason.

If you were deserted on an island, who are 3 famous people you would want with you?
Stephen Fry to entertain, Delia Smith to cook and Lady J to tuck me in at night.

One of your favorite quotes -
All the world's queer save thee and me, and even thee's a little queer.

List 3 of your all time favorite movies?
The Lion in Winter, On Golden Pond, Guess who's coming to dinner.

An actress you have a crush on -
Find a common thread in the last question. ( and perhaps Sandra Bullock).

What is a movie or TV show that you watched recently and really enjoyed?
I adore The Big Bang Theory.

Patti Says:  Me Too!
