Big Dragons Don't Cry (A Dragon's Guide to Destiny) By C. M. Barrett

About the Book:

A depressed dragon, impudent kitten, and frightened young woman make an unlikely trio to save the dragon's swamp and lead humans to wholeness.

They need the help of the country's leader, but he ignores animals, fears the dragon, and wants the young woman to be the mother of the heir he so desperately needs.

Only a crisis that threatens his country can persuade him to lose his mind, find his heart, and save his people.

From the Author

Big Dragons Don't Cry highlights the separation between humans and the rest of life that allows ecological disasters to unfold.

Instead of writing an angry treatise that condemned my species, I chose to use fantasy and humor to ask these questions:

What would the world be like if humans and animals understood and respected each other?

What could humans learn if we no longer saw ourselves as apart from nature but entered wholeheartedly into the dance of life?

The question "What if" is necessary for all fiction writers to ask, and my perspective helps me to helps me to imagine new possibilities. I think every author expresses her/his way of seeing the world. My viewpoint has helped to take me off the well-worn track of accepted truths and taught me to question just about everything.

About the Author:

As a child, C. M. Barrett discovered mythology and fantasy. Trained at a young age to believe in dragons, she enjoys their company now. Because she's gifted with an imagination that takes bizarre turns, she likes to contemplate the differences between dragons of various elements, how they might get along with cats and kittens, and how humans might respond to the idea that a dragon they considered their enemy might be a friend.

With other books projected or written in the series, A Dragon's Guide to Destiny, she expects to be considering these questions for some time.

She lives in upstate New York on a wooded piece of land not unlike some of the scenery in Big Dragons Don't Cry.

Regarding her purpose in writing the series, the author says:

"Although I wrote Big Dragons Don't Cry well before the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the novel's story highlights the separation between humans and the rest of life that allows ecological disasters to unfold.

I used the medium of fantasy to imagine new possibilities:

What would the world be like if humans and animals understood and respected each other?

What could humans learn if we no longer saw ourselves as apart from nature but entered wholeheartedly into the dance of life? We might trip over our feet at first, but practice makes improvement.
